There wasn't even much variety in the actual game, but then when you think of the variety compared to the overall series there was hardly none. DS3 had great design, but the levels were so dreary and samey and been there, done that. Those are huge critiscims, and yet I still would take the levels/areas of DS2 over DS3. Levels/Areas: Now the biggest critiscism of DS2 is non connected world design and less intricate and worse level design. I may be standing on an island on this, but I love the DS2 lore.ġ. DS3 was so on teh nose is connecting itself to DS1 that it simply bored me to tears. I loved the story of the Giants, Vendrick and Nashandra and especially Aldia and his wild experiments. It was vague, it was mysterious, I wanted to know more about Drangleic and how it connected to the Souls world. DS2 did its own thing and only had a handful of interesting callbacks to DS1. Now most of Gaf seems to have been glad that MIyazaki disregarded DS2, because of the lore, but I really really disagree. It seemed super sterile and worn out.ĭS2 on the other hand fascinated me. From the opening cutscene to the first 6-7 areas, I didn't have that wild eyed curiosity that I did in the previous games. Damn, From played it so safe and every time I got to a new area, it was "guess which DS1 place this is." Mystery really keeps me invested in the series and I had very little mystery and intrigue driving me in DS3. DS3 went overboard with the callbacks and similiar aesthetics of DS1. Lore - This not only includes the actual lore, but the story and presentation and items and setting. DS2 is has my favorite PVP in the series.Ģ. If you include the DLC (and it seems that DS3 won't have as meaty of a DLC), DS2 is massive with a different NG+ and a harder difficult. Unlike Bloodborne, both games suffered from some dull areas that should have been cut, so I don't think there is a quality vs. However, DS3 just didn't have the sprawling, adventurous feel that DS2 had cause it seemed much smaller in scope. Content - Now I still think Bloodborne is the greatest game of the series, so I in no way do I think more is better. I'm not going to go to far in depth because I haven't tried out everything, but this was my first impression.Ĥ.

For PVE and for PVP, DS2 seemed to have so much more depth and role playing options than DS3. My magician wasn't very fun to play, my faith build was decent, and even my heavy weapon build was not as enjoyable to me as it was in DS1 and DS2. Role Playing - I have not tried out every single build or every single option, but on first glance it seems that DS3 simply doesn't have as many viable builds as DS2. There are 5 major reasons for me why I think DS2 is better than 3 from least important to most important.ĥ. Also, I love all souls game and I like DS3 even if its my least favorite game of one of my favorite series. So my opinion can change in the future, but this is my opinion now (its been awhile since I played vanilla DS2, but I still probably prefer that over DS3). For as many salty threads there were about the game, I want to give my thoughts on why DS3 (a Miyazaki game through and through) is not quite as good as the second game.Īs a disclaimer, one has dlc (great dlc), while only one has released for DS3 and its brand new and I haven't played it. Granted, this was not everyone's opinion, but you would certainly hear it repeated a lot in threads. After the release of DS2, almost all you would hear around here was B-team, awful world design, and Miyazaki is a god among insects (that's why his lesser presence in the development of this game was the cause of this "unmitigated disaster").
